The Revolution

The world is going through a revolution. At least that’s what marketing and leadership strategist David Meerman Scott says. David is a veteran to the publishing business and has been involved with several publishing companies prior to the Web.

“I was able to understand all of this good, cool stuff about how to publish electronic content before the Web. That gave me a really good opportunity to understand way before everybody else that the idea behind web marketing is really about content creation,” he said.

David said that to people who didn’t grow up with online communications, the Web is the most significant revolution in communications history, even topping the invention of the printing press in the 1400s, which brought people out of the Medieval period and into the Renaissance.

Today six billion people are connected to electronic communication and have access to virtually anything in the online world. The internet allows people all over the planet to connect with anyone at any time, which means that every business should be taking advantage of new technology and adapting strategies to fit consumers’ needs.

“This is just the way that people are communicating. It doesn’t mean television is going away. It doesn’t mean magazines are going away. They’re not, but this is the most important form of communication ever devised, this online one-to-one communication that you and I are doing right now, and that billions of people around the world are doing,” he said.

According to David, many new social networks will emerge in time, especially as new forms of communication and information sharing evolve. One change he expects to see is the improvement of bandwidth, which will make sharing and communicating easier and faster.

Despite small changes, the improvement in communication in the next 20 years will not be nearly as significant as it has been between 20 years ago and today. David said to expect small improvements in social, but no large changes overall.

Social networks have evolved to fit users’ needs since their beginning, and continue to evolve to fit marketers’ needs today. Because users gravitate toward certain social networks, the networks themselves become a more valuable tool, and the longer users take to join networks, the harder it is to gain a strong following.

But David said that the tools and social networks themselves aren’t the most important part of a social media marketing strategy.

“I think that a lot of people make a mistake in jumping into the tools that you can use to share content first, but they don’t spend enough time creating the content that will be shared. You’ve got to have something worthy of being shared before you start sharing,” he said.

Newsjacking and Content Sharing

David shared a concept that is also the subject and title of one of his books. The concept is called newsjacking and it’s the idea of using the brand’s ideas and putting them into a news story. For example, if a news event occurs and is somehow related to a brand’s product or service, it can be written into a story.

“If you have an expertise on the subject of what’s breaking, then you have an opportunity to get your ideas into that breaking news story. That requires very quick thinking and it requires you to have a legitimate tie in the story, and there’s a number of ways that organizations can then get noticed when they inject their ideas into a reporter,” he said.

Content, whether text-based or visual, should include different ways to share content so that readers and viewers can easily spread the word. David uses Pinterest’s pin-it button on each of his blog posts so that users have the option to share it through the highly visual platform.

“Anybody can add my blog content to their pinboards. That’s something fundamental that people should do, even if they’re not themselves on Pinterest,” he said.

David said that most organizations also don’t take enough advantage of video and image platforms, including Youtube and Instagram, but visual platforms will improve over time because more brands will catch on.

Even with social networks designed specifically to showcase specific types of content, David says that the best way that a brand can showcase its content is to put the content on its own website or blog. This brings more consumers to the organization’s website, which means that more eyes see what it can offer them.

“YouTube or Instagram is just a form of getting that [content] to be shared. Ultimately, getting high search engine results for important phrases is a very important way to market, and the only way to get great search engine results is to create great content,” he said.

David and Hubspot’s CEO Brian Halligan wrote a book about the classic band The Grateful Dead and their incredible marketing strategy. They explaind how the band’s 1960s marketing techniques can tie into today’s marketing techniques, using ideas like free content and experimenting with different ways to create and share that content.

He said, “They built a really loyal fan base of people who followed them, because they wanted to be part of a tribe—they wanted to be part of a group of people. There are a number of organizations that have done that recently. Those people become your biggest advocates. They actually end up helping to market your company for you.

David has written eight books in total and encourages people to read them, especially his newest book, World Wide Rave, which is free to download. He also earns his living as a public speaker and has given presentations in 36 countries around the world.

Over at Switch Reports, we’ve been talking to social media experts from all over the place. These experts have ranged from social media consultants to investors to marketers, all of whom have built their professional careers from the ground up and have years of experience in their fields.

We learned all about some awesome social media techniques, tips and tricks for consultants. Here are the top five key takeaways from our interviews with four social media pros.

1. It’s not about the technology.

What many new consultants and marketers fail to realize in the beginning is that social media consulting isn’t just about the tools you use to get the job done or the number of social networking sites you use for your client.

Social media consultant Brandon Krieger said that during a consultation with any business, the first thing he requests is a business plan and growth strategy before taking the brand to any social media site.

“One of my biggest failures was a construction company that I worked with when I first went out on my own, and I never assessed their business model. I’m like, ‘Let’s put you on the social networks.’ Well over the next 60 days, they started getting more and more clients, and more and more contracts to the point where she couldn’t handle the business, and 90 days later she went bankrupt,” he said.

According to Brandon, his client’s missing business plan caused her business to cave, even though she was quickly growing through social media. Without a proper plan or strategy, social media marketing can become overwhelming and can fail.

2. Brace yourselves, mobile marketing is growing.

Social media isn’t limited to desktop computers. Mobile apps make social media websites accessible virtually anywhere at any time. Today a large part of social media’s overall growth is due to mobile apps, which is why more and more marketers are learning more about investing in the mobile market.

Social media pro Lawrence Bland said, “That’s a huge, huge untapped market. When you look at it now, not everybody has a computer, but almost everybody and their kids has a cell phone or smart phone.”

This is one of the major changes that he sees taking place in social’s near future. He sees such a huge boom in mobile marketing that it will eventually get out of hand and have to be more closely regulated.

Lou Kerner, a social media investor at The Social Internet Fund, also sees a bright future for mobile marketing. He said that every social media website will eventually come equipped with a mobile app and that marketers need to understand how to engage on all versions of a site in order to achieve the best results.

“When we first got television, the first shows were people sitting at a table with a microphone. In other words, they were doing radio on television. Today, mobile advertising is web advertising on a mobile device. It’s a brand new environment, and advertisers will emerge over time,” he said.

This is something for social media marketers and consultants to look forward to and learn more about as it grows with social media.

“The amount of knowledge that a marketer has to know today is exponentially greater than it was just a few years ago,” said Lou.

3. Video is king.

Youtube is the world’s largest video hosting website with over one billion users and over 72 hours of video uploaded every minute. Its role in online advertising is growing as well and companies are taking advantage of creating videos for their websites and social media profiles.

Social Media Pro Tamar Weinberg said that video can send great marketing messages and can be fun for the viewers; however, the ads before the actual video can be distracting, unattractive and can take interest away from the intended video.

“The ad is simply not fun or engaging. Make your video pop within the first two seconds, and tell me who you are from the get-go so you get that brand awareness. That’s where the attention needs to be grabbed, especially on platforms where pre-roll can be skipped,” she said.

Video takes out the extra work involved for the audience, according to Lawrence. He said that consumers are typically more responsive to video as opposed to text-based content because the work is already done for them.

“It’s almost like they’re reading a book to you,” he said.

Online video marketing is expanding on other platforms, too. Facebook video, which has been around for years, is growing for marketers, and apps like Vine and Snapchat are examples of video outlets that can be used to easily cater to a specific online audience.

4. Consult on a topic you care about.

Brandon said that the best place to start when deciding what type of brand you want to consult for is personal interest. In order for consultants to accurately guide their clients, they have to be knowledgeable about the topic on which they’re consulting.

“You’ve got to make sure that you understand it because you’re branding that company. You have to know how to speak the language of the community,” he said.

For a consultant to take on a brand that he or she knows nothing about is a risky move because there has to be knowledge and interest in the topic to create a successful social media campaign. As the consultant or marketer, you are the person behind the Facebook page and have the most influence in the marketing decisions.

5. Every relationship is important.

One of the most important parts of social media consulting is building relationships that can last with new and old clients. According to Lawrence, when a potential client feels like they know you personally, they’re more likely to invest in your services or products.

“Build and nurture that relationship. I don’t mean you have to become best buddies, but you’re connecting in there. And keep this in mind: People buy from who they know, like and trust,” he said.

Brandon said, “Any time they have questions and concerns, they can always email or contact us through cell phones. It creates that relationship atmosphere so that they know that we’re there for them. We’re not there just to be in business and consult with them, but we actually build that relationship with them.”

Establishing a personal connection with social media clients can lead to lasting relationships from which both you and the client can benefit. When combined with a great strategy and useful tools, strong relationships can be the leading influences in a social media consulting or marketing business.

Social media sites are constantly changing and evolving to fit users’ needs and wants. Do you ever wonder where it’s going next? What’s going to be the latest social media technology or trend? Better yet, where will social media take marketing and how can social media consultants utilize the tools to create a better and more effective marketing experience?

We asked Lawrence Bland, a social media expert, consultant and enthusiast about some of his expectations, tools and secrets.

Mortgage Broker-turned-Social Media Consultant

Self-employment has been Lawrence Bland’s career choice for all of his adult life, and social media consulting has been his passion for over four years. He originally worked in both finance and real estate, but when the economy began to decline he decided to take his career in a new direction.

Lawrence took the knowledge he learned from promoting his past businesses online and worked to share it with other people through his own social media consulting business. His decision was wise, and for the past several years his consulting business has been a thriving success.

Though he still dabbers in his past self-made businesses from time to time, Lawrence keeps busy with consulting. Between the approximately 300 websites that he manages, Lawrence teaches people how to be successful social media marketers and consultants. Why?

“Social media is one of the greatest ways to cut your costs in regards to marketing. It’s an absolutely fantastic way,” he explained.

Behind The Scenes

Here’s the raw audio file of Catie’s interview with Lawrence for her article.
(including the pops, cracks, phone rings, and all!) Click to Listen to the interview!

Great Expectations

In Lawrence’s words, “Social media is just booming.”

In other words, it’s not going anywhere. Since the beginning of the internet, websites have evolved to fit the needs of more and more people. Today it’s a necessary part of most businesses in this incredibly busy world, and for many businesses, the internet and social media represent the office and the job.

There will always be new technology, and with new technology, there will be more ways to access social media. 3G, 4G, wi-fi and other similar technologies already give users the ability to access the internet from virtually anywhere using a smart phone or tablet computer.

According to Lawrence, since its beginning, social media marketing has already “changed a lot. Social media started with emailing. Email marketing still works…Just general marketing isn’t going to work. You’ve got to be very specific in your marketing, you’ve got to do niche marketing. If you have a product or service that you want to market, you can’t just throw it at the general public and hope that you’re going to make sales,” he said.

This niche marketing is an idea to strongly consider when starting a new social media consulting business. Consultants must become more refined in their strategies. Defining the interest of an audience is an essential step that consultants must take in their businesses to ensure the success of their businesses and the happiness of their clients.

“If you have a product or service that you want to market, you can’t just throw it at the general public and hope that you’re going to make sales. You’ve got to find people that are looking for what you’re selling or what you’re marketing,” said Lawrence.

Skype is social media marketing’s best kept secret.

The development of new social media tools and the evolution of current tools are two more expectations that Lawrence is looking forward to for consulting in the near future. He said that tools are some of the most important objects behind social media because tools help to create relationships and communicate effectively.

Tools help marketers and consultants save hours of their time by allowing them to communicate with thousands, or even millions, of people at one time. In Lawrence’s case, his favorite tool (and best-kept-secret) is Skype.

Skype has over 300 million users, yet the tool is still largely untapped by social media marketers and consultants for business use. Why? According to Lawrence, it’s still the biggest secret in social media marketing. It’s almost hard to believe that such a widely-used, extremely personal form of communication has not yet been completely uncovered and utilized by consultants.

“I’ve got about 9000 contacts on Skype. That’s a lot when you think about it. Now granted, I don’t talk to 9000 people a day, but if I send out a broadcast, I can reach that many people in one day, and it’s a much more personal approach with Skype,” said Lawrence in an example.

Lawrence utilizes the tool by sending a weekly personalized message to each of his 9000 contacts, including each recipient’s name, a greeting and inspirational quotes. He does it through a tool that allows him to widely broadcast a message and automatically adds each contact’s name to the beginning of the message. The kicker is that it actually works. He receives hundreds of responses to his messages. Clients and other contacts like the idea that their consultant is keeping up with them and is still interested in how they’re doing long after they’ve worked together.

Like other social media experts, Lawrence is excited about the rising popularity of video marketing and video technology. He said that if a picture is worth one thousand words, a video must be worth at least one million.

“Most people, when they get a link or something, they click on it, and they don’t want to read a page full of stuff. They want to see a video. That’s what’s going to capture them in there. People are going to respond more because they don’t have to do any extra work. They’ll do something that’s even more powerful—through a video, the words are coming across the screen, and it’s almost like they’re reading a book to you,” he said.

He’s right—lengthy written advertisements are easy for most people to pass up, but videos are easy to watch, and it often takes less time to watch a video than it does to read an article about a business. As Lawrence said, there’s no work involved. Video is already a shortcut for the audience to get engaged and get excited about a business.

Be Prepared

Being prepared isn’t just about having the tools it takes to build a successful social media consulting business today. Sure, a consultant needs the obvious tools—the internet, a few social media accounts with followers, among other online tools; however, there are more tools that many new consultants overlook when trying to start a business.

First, take the time to build relationships with people before jumping right in and trying to sell them something. Let them know about the business, but keep up with them on Facebook and Twitter and send them an occasional nice message to let them know that they haven’t been forgotten.

Lawrence said, “Build and nurture that relationship. I don’t mean you have to become best buddies with someone, but still, you’re connecting in there. People buy from who they know, like and trust.”

Building this trust-filled relationship will be a major boost for business and can be the push that potential clients need to become actual clients.

Next, patience and open-mindedness are two attributes that consultants need when starting up a new business. Starting any new business takes time, and when business owners accept the amount of time it actually takes, they can be freed of a lot of stress and aggravation when hundreds of clients don’t immediately flock to them.

Remember that no matter how experienced or seasoned a consultant is, he or she can always learn something from someone.

“I literally learn something new every day that I didn’t know previously…You’ll never know so much that you don’t have to listen to somebody. You’re just starting out. Don’t assume that you know everything and say, ‘Ok, I took a course,’ or ‘I’ve been doing this for a year or three years or four years.’ I’ll listen to what somebody has to say that’s just starting out that might show me some insight. You’ve still got to keep your ears open and your mind open,” said Lawrence.

With the right tools, strong relationships, enough patience and an open mind, starting a social media consulting business can be an incredibly successful career choice and can open endless opportunities.

Facebook contests seem to be all the rage in social media marketing right now. Contests bring awareness to brands and increase Likes and engagement from users. Here are a few examples of different types of Facebook contests that we love.

1. Axe’s Photo Caption Contest

Facebook photo caption contests tend to grab a lot of users’ attention and have a high participation rate because they’re fun. Users just have to think of something clever or funny describing a given picture and then comment their caption below. In a matter of minutes, users can be included in the contests, and the winners get some sort of prize (who doesn’t love prizes?!).

Why We Love This Facebook Contest

Axe’s photo caption contest was a great idea to get Axe fans excited about the Christmas holidays in 2012. The prize was snowboard gear for him or for her, and all that participants had to do was to comment on a featured picture with a funny or witty caption and then enter the contest on Axe’s Facebook page. It engaged creativity from consumers and brought out the fun and humor that we all know and love from Axe’s TV ads.

How Can Small Businesses Use This Type of Contest?

Your business doesn’t have to have a big name to use a photo caption contest. Work toward engaging customers in your area and create a contest that reflects what your business does and that will intrigue your customers. Using humor to connect with your customers is a smart way to get them involved. You don’t have to offer huge prizes, either. Offer a free service or even a t-shirt and you’re likely to grab the attention of tons of people, especially if you already have a large following on Facebook.

2. Northridge4X4′s “It’s Like Gold Sweepstakes” Contest

Here’s a super simple Facebook contest that inspired thousands of people to like the Northridge4X4 page. All users had to do to enter was Like the page and enter their email address. Their name was then put into a drawing. It was easy and only took about 30 seconds for each user to engage.

Why We Love This Facebook Contest

The Northridge4X4 It’s Like Gold Sweepstakes was a really smart move because it took almost no time for users to enter, and the prize of a $250 shopping spree for their car was a nice incentive to share an email address. Users could enter once a day, and if they got their friends to enter they also received five additional entries for themselves. The motive behind the contest was to help the business reach 12,500 Likes before it ended. Guess what? It worked!

How Can Small Businesses Use This Type of Contest?

Northridge4X4 is a company that sells Jeep parts. They ship their products all over the U.S., but their main store is located in Washington. They were a small business that reached out using Facebook and grew their Facebook following with a contest. Any small business can use a contest this simple to help them grow. When you encourage your current following to help increase your Facebook Likes by engaging in a contest as simple as this one, the word about your business can spread with hardly any effort.

3. Zales’ “The Most Epic Proposal Ever” Video Contest

Video contests are great because they’re exciting and can draw in a lot of participants with creative ideas. Zales was able to use this type of contest to touch the hearts of people all over, while also bringing attention to their own business though Likes and Comments.

Why We Love This Facebook Contest

Who doesn’t love a heartfelt video dedicated to making someone happy? Not only were participants encouraged to bring out their creative sides, but they were offered the grand prize of a free engagement ring and trip to Mexico for the proposal of a lifetime. Sure, it was a little mushy, but it was a great attention grabber and a smart move for Zales and the hotel that’s putting up the lucky winners, Iberostar Hotels and Resorts. Not only did this get more likes for the jewelry brand, but it also made their products more sharable and attractive to men and women. Plus, it was pretty easy to get involved. All users had to do was use their webcam or phone to make a video explaining their plan for an over-the-top marriage proposal and then upload it to Zales’ Facbeook page.

How Can Small Businesses Use This Type of Contest?

So you can’t afford to give away a diamond ring and luxury vacation? No problem. Video contests don’t have to be this extreme. Instead, you can ask participants to make a quick funny or touching video to upload to your Facebook page, depending on your business. Asking people to get in touch with their creative side can be a great move because it’s fun and you can really tap into the different emotions of your customers. A video contest can engage customers who may not have otherwise wanted to participate because it doesn’t take too much time and is still exciting to create and post.

What other great Facebook contests have you seen? Share them with us below!
